co-creation workshop

During the Milano Design Week on April 16, 2024, the SUPSI team conducted a co-creation workshop at Spazio Lampo, hosted by Isola Design. This workshop, part of the LAUDS initiative, brought together 15 participants, including designers, companies, and collectives, to collaboratively design a blueprint for a sustainable and innovative LAUDS factory.

The workshop focused on envisioning a factory model centered around sustainability and advanced production techniques. Participants emphasized the importance of on-demand production to reduce waste, aligning with lean manufacturing principles. The factory's core offerings would include sustainable construction solutions, ranging from low-end to high-end products, tailored to meet global sustainability demands. A notable feature of the envisioned factory is its emphasis on recycling and upcycling, supported by advanced 3D software for architectural applications, showcasing the factory's commitment to sustainability.

A dedicated technology development team, comprising computational designers and engineers, was proposed to ensure the factory remains at the forefront of innovation. This team would drive the continuous evolution of technologies, ensuring the factory's relevance and adaptability in the rapidly changing industry landscape.

Community engagement emerged as a crucial element of the factory's strategy. The workshop participants highlighted the importance of involving both traditional and digital artisans in the factory's operations. Initiatives like RedLab were proposed to foster community collaboration and value creation, positioning the factory as a hub for both local and international partnerships.

However, the workshop also identified several challenges, including the high capital investment required for advanced technologies like CNC machines and the difficulty in maintaining a skilled workforce. To overcome these obstacles, participants suggested leveraging underutilized urban spaces for mini-factories and expanding educational programs to meet the industry's evolving demands.

The SUPSI workshop in Milano successfully outlined a visionary blueprint for a LAUDS factory that blends sustainability, innovation, and community engagement, setting a strong foundation for future developments in sustainable urban manufacturing.
