How can you learn more about LAUDS Factories? Read the interview with one of the key protagonists: Mafalda Trigueiro junior project manager at INOVA+

What LAUDS means and how do you envision the future of production in Europe?

For me, LAUDS represents a meaningful shift in the way we think about manufacturing. It's not just about production; it's about creating spaces that bring together sustainability, innovation, and community. The concept of LAUDS Factories, which focuses on small-scale, local production integrated with cutting-edge digital technologies, resonates with me. It’s about breaking away from traditional mass production and embracing something that values both people and the planet.
This idea reminds me of a wonderful book I’ve read—Small Is Beautiful: A Study of Economics as if People Mattered by E.F. Schumacher. In it, Schumacher advocates for an economics that centers human well-being and the environment, rather than just growth and profit. LAUDS embodies that same spirit. It’s not just about efficiency; it’s about creating an ecosystem where innovation and sustainability coexist, where local resources are used wisely, and where communities are valued.
What excites me most about LAUDS is the focus on people—creatives, entrepreneurs, and makers—who are not only involved in the production process but are actively shaping it. As someone who has always wished I could have studied design, seeing it applied in such a tangible way, especially in areas traditionally overlooked, is fulfilling.
Looking ahead, I wish the future of production in Europe would be defined by innovation that is deeply connected to local communities. Ideally, we would see a move away from massive factories and towards smaller, more flexible spaces where people could collaborate and create in ways that are not only efficient but environmentally responsible. Europe, with its growing commitment to sustainability, could lead the way, and I truly hope that projects like LAUDS help shape this kind of future. – it might be utopic, but worth fighting for!

What’s the role of Inova+?

At INOVA+, our role is to monitor whether the teams are achieving their goals and to support them in overcoming any challenges they face. We work closely with the host Fab Labs and other LAUDS partners to ensure the teams have the necessary resources and guidance. Additionally, we handle some administrative tasks to make sure they have everything they need to succeed and keep the project on track. It’s an inspiring process, as we get to see how the hybrid teams collaborate and innovate, and we help facilitate that through both administrative and strategic support.

What expertise can you offer?

The expertise I bring to the table is rooted in my enthusiasm for design and innovation, even though I haven’t formally studied design myself. I find it incredibly fulfilling to work in a space where design intersects with sustainable production, especially in a project like LAUDS that encourages local, sustainable manufacturing. The energy and creativity coming from the hybrid teams are truly inspiring, and it’s exciting to witness how these teams, alongside my colleagues and I, are pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in industries like energy, agriculture, and mobility.
My colleagues and I also bring adaptability to the project. In an environment as dynamic as the LAUDS factories, unforeseen challenges are inevitable. Together, we’ve developed a strong ability to respond to these challenges and support the teams in staying on course to meet their targets. Whether it’s offering solutions to technical obstacles or facilitating communication across diverse teams, our goal is always to ensure the project’s success.
Above all, it’s great to be part of a consortium where so many different backgrounds and areas of expertise blend together. It’s inspiring to see how each team member brings something unique to the table, and it’s a fantastic learning experience for me as I continue to grow in my role.
